The Flagseller

Wrinkled, lifelessly she stands,
holding a wailing child in her arms,
Bearing the brunt of sun & rain,
Unflagged, selling the paper flags.

The woman stares at me with lifeless eyes
An abyss of India's growth story,
Holding a bundle of Tricolours;
The Indian flag made in China.

I wonder if those three colours mean
Anything to the colourless woman.
As India soars high to touch the sky,
Her feeble child welters in her soiled clothes.

As India celebrates the Independence day,
Achieving milestones of glory & pride,
The bed of stones awaits this flagseller
Retreating to a slumber of dreamless future.

Perception and Reality differ a lot of times.
And rhyme less poetry looks good, btw!

Why is the media in India so negative?

Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements? We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why?

We are the first in milk production.

We are number one in Remote sensing satellites.

We are the second largest producer of wheat.

We are the second largest producer of rice.

Look at Dr. H Sudarshan, he has transferred a tribal village into a self-sustaining, self-driving unit. There are millions of such achievements but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters.

I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert into an orchid and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The gory details of killings, bombardments, deaths, were inside in the newspaper, buried among other news.

In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime. Why are we so NEGATIVE…?

@gauri
yeah..i tried a rhyme less poetry because there wasn't an ounce of rhyme in the theme of the poetry.. it all looked without a rhyme.. thank u

sorry if you have misconstrued the idea behind the poem as a negative expression..
it was an attempt, paradoxical or ironical it may sound, but you can't deny the fact that leaving the factual figures apart... there is a huge chasm in the way India is moving ahead.
And coming to a basic question, for whom is india moving ahead? For people like us who can afford to spend hours on internet, who can afford to speak out, who get 2 square meals daily?
i don't think the people like this flagseller have experienced a word which spells GROWTH..
my musings could be a little pessimistic if you would say that, but then its the way i look at reality!!

thank u so much for your comments! :-)
